Medical Fitout Design & Construction

Medical practice and doctor's surgery design and fitout

BUILT FOR HEALTHCARE

Medical spaces carry a lot of weight. They need to be calm enough to put patients at ease, functional enough to support clinical precision, and durable enough to handle years of daily use. Pulling all of that together takes more than a good eye for interiors.

Dentec has spent over 12 years designing and building healthcare environments across New Zealand. We understand the compliance requirements, the operational pressures, and the small design decisions that have a big impact on how a practice actually runs. From GP surgeries and specialist consulting suites to radiology facilities and day procedure units, we bring that same expertise to every medical fitout we take on.

WHAT WE DO DIFFERENTLY

  • Spaces Designed Around People, Not Just Plans
A room that looks right on paper can still feel wrong in practice. We think carefully about how patients move through your space, where anxiety tends to build, and how your clinical team needs to operate day to day, then design accordingly. The result is a practice that runs smoothly from day one.

  • Compliance Built In From the Start
Medical facilities are subject to specific building, health, and safety requirements, and those standards vary depending on the services you offer. Whether you need radiation shielding for an imaging room, specific ventilation for a procedure suite, or hygiene-grade surface finishes, we factor all of it into the design before a single wall goes up.

  • Layouts That Improve How Your Practice Operates
Poorly planned medical spaces cost time and cause frustration. We look at how clinical staff, reception, and patients all share the space, and design layouts that reduce unnecessary movement, support clear workflows, and make even the busiest days more manageable.

  • Equipment and Technology Coordinated From Day One
Medical equipment has specific structural, electrical, and spatial requirements. We coordinate procurement and installation alongside the build so nothing gets retrofitted or compromised. When handover happens, your practice is ready to operate immediately.

NEW BUILD

Building a medical practice from the ground up is a significant undertaking, and there's a lot that can go wrong if the right expertise isn't in the room early. We've managed ground-up healthcare builds all across New Zealand, and we know what it takes to deliver a compliant, functional, well-designed practice on time and on budget. We handle everything from site feasibility and council consents through to construction and handover.

FITOUT

FITOUT

Taking on a new tenancy or a shell space? A medical fitout is not the same as a standard commercial one. The compliance requirements, services infrastructure, and functional demands are all more complex. We bring the full picture to your fitout: space planning, compliance documentation, construction, and equipment installation, all coordinated under one roof so nothing slips through the cracks.

RENOVATION

RENOVATION

Many practices reach a point where the space they started in no longer reflects the practice they've become. Whether that means reconfiguring a layout that never quite worked, upgrading finishes and equipment, or expanding into an adjoining tenancy, we manage the renovation around your operating hours to keep disruption to your patients and team to a minimum.

Frequently Asked Questions
General
Does Dentec manage building and resource consents for medical projects?
Yes. We manage the entire council approval process on your behalf, including both building and resource consents, so you're not left interpreting planning requirements on top of everything else involved in setting up a practice.
Can Dentec help assess whether a site is suitable for a medical practice?
Yes. Not every space that looks right on paper will work once you factor in zoning, structural requirements, and services capacity. We carry out site feasibility assessments early in the process so you can make an informed decision before committing to a lease or purchase.
Do you have experience with radiation shielding and imaging room requirements?
Yes. We have experience designing and building compliant imaging environments and work closely with radiation safety specialists to ensure every detail meets the required standards.
How long does a typical medical fitout or build take?
It depends on the scope. A straightforward fitout of an existing tenancy might take three to four months, while a ground-up build will take longer. We'll provide a realistic programme at the outset and keep you updated throughout.
Can you work around an operating practice to minimise patient disruption?

Where possible, yes. For renovation and staged fitout projects, we plan the construction programme around your operating hours and sequence the work to keep disruption to a minimum.

Does Dentec offer branding and signage services?

Yes. We offer branding and identity services as part of our wider practice setup support, helping you present a consistent, professional image from day one.

What isn't included in a Dentec build?

Our builds cover design, construction, project management, consents, and equipment coordination. Consumables, IT infrastructure, software, and ongoing maintenance contracts fall outside a standard build. We'll be upfront about scope during the budgeting phase so you know exactly what to plan for.
